Escola Básica e Secundária Gonçalves Zarco Field trip to IPMA

In the morning of 30/03/2019 teachers and students from Escola Básica e Secundária Gonçalves Zarco that work on this project, made a field trip to IPMA (The Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere). This trip was important, in order to know learn about the work that is done in this institute, and also to see how some physical quantities are measured (like wind speed, its direction, intensity of solar radiation and the number of hours in which radiation arrives to the surface of the earth in Funchal).

At the end of the project, students will have to decide, based on scientific data available, which renewable energy devices are the most suitable to install in our school. The manager of the institute, Victor Prior, showed the building and the way the weather conditions are predicted, as well as devices used to measure data and the way they work. According to the institute predictions, this day would be rainy in the afternoon, which proved to be true later. Students asked some questions, related with their work and the climate. They found out that wind speed is low in Funchal and it doesn’t blow on a regular basis, which makes wind generators unsuitable for our island. They also took note of the software used to collect and process the collected data and concluded that they have not changed significantly in recent years. These data allowed students to discard the use of wind energy at school. The trip ended with the launch of a weather balloon and the explanation of the way it works and collects data related with temperature, humidity, pressure,… And they discussed the possible applications / uses of this data.
